The American Association of University Women's (AAUW) Jamestown Branch is teaming up with the Jamestown Community College (JCC) Student Senate to host a Pay Equity Day spaghetti dinner on Tuesday, April 4th from 5:30 7:00 at the Weeks Room in JCC's Arts and Sciences Building.
Tickets will be $10 for men, $8 for women, $5 for children under 12, and $5 for students with ID.
Proceeds from the dinner will benefit the Salvation Army Anew Center. The Center works with women and men affected by domestic violence. Following the dinner across the hall in the Scharmann Theatre, the improv group, Mission IMPROVables will perform. The event is at 7 pm and free and open to the public. Reduced priced memberships of $45.50 to AAUW will be available at the spaghetti dinner. The membership is good through June 30, 2018 and open to women and men with a two year degree or higher.

Men will pay $2 more for the spaghetti dinner to recognize the gap between men and women's salaries. Pay Equity Day is the symbolic day when women's pay finally "catches up" to the wages that men took home the previous year. The date represents the fact that women working full time, year-round in the United States typically are paid just 80 percent of what men are paid, or a gap of 20 percent. (AAUW also observes the equal pay days in March for Asian American women, in August for African American women, in September for Native American women, and in October for Latina women.) Missing 20 percent or more of a paycheck is a hard hit and over time adds up. The pay gap is closing but at a glacial pace. At the current rate, women will not achieve equal pay until 2152.
The JCC Student Senate is the officially recognized student governing body of Jamestown Community College. Student Senate represents the student body and the community, and has a direct voice in all student affairs and many college activities.
AAUW advances equity for women and girls through education, advocacy, philanthropy, and research. For more information about AAUW, go to www.aauw.org; www.jamestown-ny.aauw.net or check the AAUW Jamestown Branch's Face Book page.
