WESTFIELD - The deadline was met and the Westfield Fire Dept. rescue boat and crew will continue to answer calls for help on Lake Erie.

Westfield Fire Chief Steve Pacanowski supplied the list of pertinent training for water rescues and boat handling to the village Fire Commission by the Aug.12 date set by commissioners at their meeting Aug. 6. The commission had set July 12 for submission of a list describing training completed by volunteers who man the department's inflatable rescue craft, but the list was not provided.

Chief Pacanowski apologized to commissioners during their August meeting and promised to meet the new deadline.

Contacted at home on Aug. 13, Fire Commission Chairman Barry Underwood confirmed he had a list that satisfied him and, he thought, would be satisfactory to the entire commission.

"As far as I'm concerned, they satisfied our request," he said.

Underwood said the description of various completed courses showed him the volunteers who make water calls are well trained. "I was pleasantly surprised," he commented.

Commissioners had expressed concerns about proper water training at both the June and July monthly meetings. "We want to be certain the crew is properly trained," Commissioner Scott Mason said at the body's June 4 session, which included a long series of back-and-forth between commissioners and volunteers attending the meeting.
