Candidate suspends NY Senate race over affair

August 13, 2014

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — A state Senate candidate from western New York is stepping away from her campaign after acknowledging an extramarital relationship that she says began this month.

Gia Arnold announced her decision Wednesday with a letter posted on her Facebook page.

While she's suspending her campaign, Arnold says she's not dropping out. Her name will appear on next month's Republican primary ballot and Arnold says that she'll serve if elected.

Arnold says she separated from her husband after beginning the affair Aug. 1.

She tells The Associated Press she decided to publicize her personal difficulties because she had run on a platform of honesty and transparency.

Arnold faces North Tonawanda Mayor Robert Ortt in the Sept. 9 primary. Democrat Johnny Destino (dehs-TEE'-noe) is also running to replace retiring Republican Sen. George Maziarz.
