LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Lee Westwood and Kevin Chappell shot 6-under 65s Thursday to share the lead in the opening round of the PGA Championship.

Tiger Woods faces the challenge of making it to the weekend at Valhalla Golf Club. He is 3 over for his round with one hole left.

Westwood, a 41-year-old Englishman who has never won a major championship despite repeated close calls, birdied nine holes. This is his best score ever in the PGA.

Chappell is a 28-year-old Californian who has yet to win in four years on the PGA Tour. He missed the cut a year ago at Oak Hill, his only other PGA appearance.

Overwhelming favorite Rory McIlroy has an afternoon tee time coming off wins at the British Open and at Firestone.
