BROCTON - Drivers should be preparing for changes on Route 20 in the Village of Brocton beginning Sept. 5. As the reopening of school approaches, State DOT officials have given the green light for culvert repairs to commence and the east edge of Old Mill Road and Route 20 in Brocton.

Both the Portland Town Council and Village of Brocton's Board of Trustees announced the closure at their monthly meetings for August to advise road traffic of the impending closure.

Brocton's Village Clerk Sonia Lusczak noted that the bridge is set to officially close at 6 a.m. on Sept. 5 and that signage would be placed one week prior to notify drivers. Area fire departments, schools as well as the Sheriff's Department for Chautauqua County have all received notice according to Lusczak, and she added that the selected contractor, Kandey Corporation, anticipates completing work within a six to eight-week time period.

Site work is beginning for the closure of a bridge on Route 20 in the village of Brocton. The bridge will close as of 6 a.m. September 5 and is expected to be out of service for up to 10 weeks for repairs.

Brocton's Fire Chief, Phil Gerace, also announced that while the bridge remains out of service, the Fredonia Fire Department will be on automatic mutual aid to assist with any calls for Brocton's coverage area. Gerace clarified that while more than one department can respond, Fredonia will be on automatic mutual aid to be sure that response is expedited should addresses west of the road work need assistance.

Kandey Corporation, who was also selected to complete the next phase of water infrastructure phases in Brocton, has already begun ditching work to prepare for site work and village officials urge drivers to use caution even before the closure takes place.
