May 1, 2017
Westfield Republican

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards is an intensive leadership training program for young adults of the ages 19 to 25 years of diverse backgrounds, who are professionals, entrepreneurs, and college/university students, and who demonstrate leadership qualities, concern for others, and self-awareness. This year the program will be held June 11-17, 2017 on the SUNY Fredonia campus. It is sponsored by Rotary District 7090 and its member Rotary Clubs in both Western New York (USA) and the Niagara Region (Canada).

Since 1960 RYLA programs have been taking place all around the world. It is one of Rotary International?s Youth Services Programs, and it demonstrates Rotary?s respect and concern for youth. In Rotary District 7090 RYLA began in 1973. Rotary clubs across the district pay the cost of registration on behalf of the RYLA candidates they select. This program is limited to 45 participants.

Candidates must be able to attend the week-long program, residing on campus and being free of any other commitments during its entire duration. The leadership training is led by a professional facilitator who is experienced in youth leadership development, and who is supported by RYLA graduates and Rotarians. This program consists of lectures, simulation games, discussion groups, committee work, public speaking and social activities. RYLA offers its participants an opportunity to learn, grow, collaborate, have fun and make new friends.

The RYLA program enables young adults to debate issues of professional responsibility and human relations, improve leadership skills, learn about businesses and institutions, and meet Rotarians, while having an enjoyable social experience. Its main objectives are as follow: to develop personal leadership and life management skills; to use applied learning to build on the presented concepts in order to make meaningful topics and discussion; to create lasting friendships and fellowship among its participants; and to support the principles of Rotary and encourage service beyond RYLA.

Participants of the RYLA program, or RYLArians, will equip themselves for success in their academic, career and personal lives by expanding their knowledge of their leadership potential and enhancing their skills in the areas of creative thinking, communication, problem solving, conflict resolution, interpersonal relationships and group dynamics.

Applications are currently being accepted. The early registration deadline is May 1.
