NEW YORK (AP) — A Scottish rower attempting a trans-Atlantic voyage has been rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard off the coast of Long Island.

The Coast Guard says 39-year-old Niall Iain Macdonald was rescued early Saturday about 50 miles south of Shinnecock, New York.

Macdonald said on his website he hoped to row solo from New York to Scotland to raise money for the Scottish Association for Mental Health

But Macdonald made a distress call Friday and the Coast Guard responded. A Coast Guard cutter based in Bayonne, New Jersey located the rower around midnight.

Lt. James Provost said Macdonald was in pain and his face was covered in blood from a cut to his head.

Provost said Madonald was "very thankful" to be rescued.

Macdonald is being treated at Bayonne Medical Center.
