NY Assembly votes to outlaw ivory sales

June 14, 2014

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York lawmakers have endorsed a plan to criminalize the sale of ivory in an effort to protect elephants and rhinos.

The legislation would make exceptions for antiques or items containing ivory that are used for scientific or educational purposes.

The state's Assembly endorsed the measure on Wednesday. Similar legislation is pending in the state Senate.

The Wildlife Conservation Society cheered the passage of the bill in the Assembly and called on the Senate to follow suit. The organization says New York is the nation's Number 1 importer of ivory.

Lawmakers are expected to adjourn their session on Thursday.
