Mayville Hardware now 60 years old

Amy Anderson Schultze is celebrating Mayville Hardware's 60th anniversary.

The building was built in the mid- to late 1800s as a boarding house. In addition to the hardware's establishment, there have been many occupants of the three-story building: a Chinese restaurant, barber shop, dance studio, CSEA office, and an abstract company.

Mayville Hardware's existence all began on May 1, 1956, when Schultze's grandfather Woodrow "Woody" Anderson purchased the existing hardware (Colton & Baker) and began the 60-year journey as Mayville Hardware Inc.

Through Mayville Hardware's first 10 years, the store's size was expanded in the back in 1958, which allowed for more storage, work and retail space. At the time, Woody also owned the local lumber yard at the head of Chautauqua Lake, and had a construction business.

As many members of the Anderson family worked on/off at the hardware store, it was Errol (Woody's second oldest child), who after returning home from his time overseas in the Army, purchased Mayville Hardware on May 1, 1966. In 1974, Errol expanded the front of the store, which increased the retail space significantly.

Both of Errol's children, Amy and Darren, worked on and off in the store during his career, along with his wife Joyce, who is currently in her 48th year of accounts receivables.

It was in? February 2009 when the third generation of Andersons - Amy - purchased Mayville Hardware from her father. Amy worked alongside her father for almost six years, but working at the store has been in her blood since she was about three years old, stuffing customers' monthly bills with advertising pamphlets.

During the past seven-plus years, Amy has completed a few projects of her own: new retail fixtures, new lighting/electrical, new flooring, and has recently updated the paint department with over 1,200 new colors.

There are over 15,000 items at Mayville Hardware with over 70,000 in the warehouse that can be ordered on a weekly basis. The hardware is ever changing with new products. Services such as key cutting, window/screen repair, pipe cutting/threading, and paint tinting keep new generations supporting Mayville Hardware.

While this is Mayville Hardware's 60th anniversary, there will be many more to celebrate.
