June 12, 2014
Westfield Republican / Mayville Sentinel News

Fifty-five people signed the attendance sheet for a buffet lunch and program at the Mayville VFW in Mayville. President Joyce Ayers welcomed everyone and Diane Goodrich gave the invocation. Joyce thanked the kitchen committee of Louise Richir, Dolly Gilbert, and Fran Miller. The secretary and treasurer reports were read and accepted.

Three thank you notes were read from the 4th of July Committee, The Humane Society in memory of Mary Eleanor Johnson, and Hospice in memory of Dorothy Akam for the clubs donations. Birthdays were announced for Betty Johnson, Francis Anderson, and Ross Field who are life members, and Betty Barnes. Anniversaries announced were James and Ruth Stacy, Ronald and Gloria Moore, and Donna and Dick Cummings. We welcomed new member Eric Kriedler.

Jeff Wagner reminded us July 18th there will be a picnic at Midway Park. Tickets are $6.00. He also talked of a possible trip to Johnstown, PA in the future if enough people show interest. New ideas are welcome.

Bill Tornstrom introduced Patricia Pihl who spoke about her book "Lost Places in Chautauqua County". She talked of the Eagle Ridge Ski Resort and the World War II camps for prisoners of war in Dunkirk fair grounds, Westfield and Brocton. Books were for sale.

The next meeting is June 19th and the speaker will be Julius J. Leone, Jr., County Fire Coordinator/Director of Emergency Services. He will show a power point presentation on the very large Ice Rescue Training drill conducted on February 22nd. The very successful full joint effort involved approximately 300 fire, police, EMT's and hospital personnel. For the 1st time a Coast Guard helicopter from Detroit was used on Chautauqua Lake. It simulated an airplane accident on the lower end of Chautauqua Lake. Leone advised that it took over 6 months to plan and carry out the training session.
