Westfield Academy and Central School is looking to "Dream It and Do It," by seeking a partnership with Renold Inc., board members learned last Monday.

Superintendent David Davison told the board that the partnership is part of the state "Dream It Do It" program that links students to careers in manufacturing. Renold Inc, formerly Ajax Flexible Coupling Company, is one of the largest mechanical power transmission companies in the world,

The partnership will provide opportunities for students to tour the plant, as well as connect them to other businesses and careers in the area, Davison said. He said he hopes the program will lead to job shadowing opportunities for students as well.

In other business, Davison reported that the State University of New York at Fredonia will be holding a three-day workshop for student teachers on the best practices in the classroom. The workshop will try to guide students so that they are familiar with terms used in the classroom and connect them with local businesses, he said.
Davison also reported that he had been meeting with members of the student ambassador group, who said that there students generally pleased with the education they received at WACS. Students said they enjoyed programs such as “We the People,” the biotech class, and AP courses, as well as having great teachers and good community support, he said.
All of the FOCUS surveys are complete, Davison said. The results will be collated and published soon, he said.

"We are hoping that students will be excited to have this experience," Davison said.

Renold Inc. manufactures transmission couplings and gearboxes, used in subway systems throughout the world. It also designs and sophisticated machinery for rolling steel and aluminum that are used in mills worldwide. It encompasses the entire process of transforming raw materials into precision machine parts.

Davison said the district applied for a grant for the program, but was denied. The Dream It Do It Western New York program seeks to promote careers in manufacturing in Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie and Niagara counties.
