CLCS children learn about recycling

May 15, 2014
Westfield Republican / Mayville Sentinel News

Young children at Chautauqua Lake Central School learned that they could re-use empty boxes, saving trees and expressing their creativity in a single project.

After reading The Big Box, by Judy Nayer, the students learned teamwork and problem solving, as each pair worked together to decide how to re-purpose a single box. They wrote words and drew pictures to explain their plans, then enjoyed making their projects.

After the display was complete, the children read the book Roxaboxen, by Alice McLerran, the true story of children who made a town out of boxes and rocks.

The team of Adan Austin and Jazmyn Young solved the problem of making two different items from a single box. Adan's helicopter sports front and rear rotors, and Jazmyn's house, complete with a hot water heater and bathtub, offers a landing pad for the aircraft. Adan and Jazmyn are kindergarten students of Ruth Frudd.
