Harry Ottaway

On May 6th 2014, Harry Ottaway passed away unexpectedly at his home in Sherman, NY.

Harry was born on February 21st, 1929 in Ripley, NY where he grew up on the Ottaway family farm with his brothers and sisters. After graduating from Ripley High School, Harry joined the Army and was stationed in Japan for two years. Upon his return from the Army he went to Alfred State University where he earned his degree in agriculture. After graduating from college in 1949 he met his wife Velma West Ottaway, at a local skating rink. Harry and Velma were married in 1950 and went on to spend 63 years of loving marriage together. Along the way they had three children, Tamera, Daniel and Gary Ottaway. Harry was hired in 1949 by Eastern Incorporated where he worked in the Chautauqua County region for 42 years. In 1967 Harry started his business Ottaway Swimming Pools, which he worked at during the summers which he still ran at 85 years old right up until the time of his passing. After his retirement from Eastern Harry and Velma spent their winters in Lakeland, Florida where Harry played tennis four hours a day and won several tennis tournaments. Harry also enjoyed playing ping pong, biking, swimming, and working on his garden. Harry had the pleasure of dancing with his grand-daughter Rachel at her wedding in 2013. Harry was also a regular at Eriez Speedway to watch his grandson Chris Ottaway race. During football season Harry never missed a game that his great-grandson Drake Ottaway played in. Harry was a dedicated loving husband to his wife of 63 years Velma Ottaway. Every chance he got Harry visited his son Dan Ottaway in South Carolina where he would help work on projects around the house and spend time together. Harry and his daughter Tamera spent countless hours together working on pools, playing tennis and many other activities. Harry will be remembered as a hard working, honest, loving family man that will be sadly missed by all his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife to whom he was married to for 63 years Velma Ottaway; Son, Danile Ottaway; Daughter, Tamera Ottaway; Grandson, Chris Ottaway, Granddaughter, Rachel Ottaway Reitz; and Great Grandson, Drake Ottaway, and Great Granddaughter Maddison Ottaway.

He was preceded in death by his parents Earl and Inez Tucker Ottaway; A Son Gary Ottaway; and by 1 Brother, and 3 Sisters.

Service's will be held at the convenience of the family, no visitation will be observed.
