Westfield’s Parent Connection is very busy

Westfield Republican / Mayville Sentinel News

Westfield's Parent Connection organization and Friends of Education Fund subcommittee have been very busy so far this year. Both organizations exist to benefit educational experiences for our school district and its' students, and have been pleased to support a wide variety of projects and programs during the 2013-2014 school year.

Parent Connection (PC) has been an active organization for many years. Its primary aim being to have parents, students, and teachers working together to create an atmosphere of cooperation and good will, as well as to provide support for current school projects and activities. During 2013-2014, PC has funded or helped to fund the following: the 3rd grade Fenton Museum trip, the elementary school's PBIS program (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports), markers for a classroom math program, Red Ribbon Week ribbons for elementary students who participated in the run, sponsorship of the STAR program one month, Kindergarten Open House refreshments and assistance, clothing for the nurses' office (gloves, hats, etc.), the math "spring training" camp for 6th grade, and has approved the payment of transportation to the Grape Discovery Center for the 2nd grade field trip. Parent Connection has also assisted with paying for the Red Carpet assembly and provided assistance with decorating and photography, donated money for the 3rd-5th grade Science Fair, bought dictionaries for a second grade class, provided pencils for 6th grade and the Occupational Therapy (OT) department, purchased recording microphones for the music department, paid for supplies which Mr. Martin's class used to make t-stools for OT, is providing financial support for the After Prom party, bought 2 calculators for special education classes in the high school, and has purchased a DVD workout program for the physical education department. At the most recent meeting, which was held on March 26, the committee also approved the purchase of a replacement swing for the playground.

The Friends of Education Fund (FOEF) is a sub-organization of Parent Connection and was created 2 years ago. Its focus is to help provide funding for programs that are either new and innovative, have been cut from the budget, or are otherwise un-fundable. The Friends of Education Fund offers Teacher Innovation grants at two times during the school year. This year's grant recipients were Inta Damcott for her field trip for art students, Kendra Bills for a Mastering ELA program for 2nd grade, and Connie Redeisel for a math class kaleidoscope project. Additional funding for the 3rd-5th grade science fair was also provided by FOEF.

The FOEF committee's most recent approval was to support the Spanish Club's 2015 trip to Costa Rica. FOEF will be assisting with grant applications and fund raising. Money donated to FOEF can be earmarked for that trip and will directly impact the cost to the students attending.

Another exciting development in the activities of FOEF is the receipt of a Western NY Foundation Trustee Grant, in the amount of $5000, dedicated to the WACS music department.

Donations to FOEF can be made to its general fund, or can be earmarked for specific programs or projects. Further information about Parent Connection (PC) or the FOEF can be obtained through the Parent Connection link on the WACS website (under "community"), or from any Friends of Education Fund committee member. Anyone is welcome to attend the monthly meetings, of which dates and times are published on the website and the Parent Connection Facebook page.
