Chautauqua Town Board holds meeting

March 20, 2014
By Connie O’Connor - Correspondent , Westfield Republican / Mayville Sentinel News

The March meeting of the Chautauqua Town Board began with a moment of silence for Fritz Overs, a former Superintendent of Schools in Ohio, and longtime resident of Dewittville and chair of the Town Zoning Board.

Later in the evening the zoning board was reorganized, with Troy Smith appointed to take over as Chair of the Zoning Board, and Rick Syper to move from alternate member to member, moving into Smith's position. Ward Raynor, Jr. was appointed as a new alternate Zoning Board member.

Dominick Hetrick, a 15 year old student from the village of Mayville, requested the town's permission to clean up the historic Bushee Cemetery on Bloomer Road, as a proposed Eagle Scout project. The cemetery contains headstones of the Bushee family, among others, dating to the Civil War era. According to Hetrick the cemetery has not been particularly well-maintained. Much of the area is overgrown with trees and brush, and some of the headstones have fallen over.

Hetrick, if his project is approved by the regional Boy Scout Council as well the Town Board, plans to remove brush and deadwood from the overgrown plots and take out some fallen trees. He plans to chop any good firewood, remove what is unusable, clear the paths through the cemetery and fill in holes and ruts. The board voted unanimously to approve Hetrick's project. Provided the project is approved by the Scout Council, work will begin as soon as the ground has firmed up in the spring.

In other business, Highway Superintendent Tim Wendell reported that his department had 21 full days of plowing in February. Clean up days for the town are set for May 5 thru 9.

The Sewer District must prepare an engineering report to go to the Department of Environmental Conservation addressing the level of phosphorus discharged into the lake. The town already meets the required standard, but must prepare the report and make plans for meeting new, lower limits to be enforced by July 1, 2018. These plans must be drawn up by 2015.
