CLYMER - The large gymnasium within Clymer Central School became awash in a sea of red during National Wear Red Day.

Hundreds of students wearing red clothing packed the gym for a photo opportunity during the district's first official observance of the holiday.

Occurring on the first Friday in February, National Wear Red Day is a national awareness campaign - sponsored by the National Heart, Blood and Lung Institute - about heart disease in women. According to Kathleen Whitmore, health and physical education teacher at Clymer, fliers were sent home with all students from kindergarten through sixth grade and the response was overwhelming.

Staff and students of Clymer Central School gather in the large gymnasium for a photo while displaying various items of red clothing in observance of National Wear Red Day.

"Any student from K through sixth grade got to wear red, and they could donate if they wanted to," Whitmore said. "For a first time (observance), I'm really surprised at how smooth it went and how cooperative everybody was. (Clymer) is a great place to work, and everybody is like a family here."

Whitmore said more than 200 students came to school wearing red, and $365 was raised for donation altogether. Based on this success, she said another observance of National Wear Red Day is likely to be in the works for next year.

"It was amazing," she said. "We had tons of kids, so this might be an annual thing now. Which is great, because I want everyone to know about this."
