CHAUTAUQUA - Royal C. Briggs Sr., 82, of Potter Road, Mayville, died Thursday (February 6, 2014) in Westfield Memorial Hospital.
He was born September 3, 1931 in the Town of North Harmony, the son of the late George and Emma Zelmer Briggs.
Royal was a heavy equipment operator for Chautauqua Institution for 52 years, where he had also been a night watchman.
He was a member of Hurlbut Memorial Community United Methodist Church, and a member of Chautauqua Fire Department of which he was a member for 59 years.
Royal enjoyed hunting and traveling especially going to Gettysburg and Tennessee. The street Royal Way in Chautauqua Institution was named after him.
He is survived by three sons, Royal "Butch" (Janet) Briggs Jr. of Chautauqua, Alden Briggs of Mayville, and Chris (Paula) Briggs of Chautauqua; seven grandchildren, Rebecca, Heather (Duane), Ashlie, Alisha (Levi), Nathaniel, Kristen, and John; six great grandchildren, Andrew, Alyse, Seven, Juliana, Ella, and Evangeline.
He was preceded in death by his wife June Newton Briggs whom he married February 25, 1955 in Chautauqua and who died January 28, 2013; seven brothers, Howard, Jim, Alden, George, Herbert, Paul, and Robert; one sister, Elizabeth Swanson.
The funeral service was held at 4 p.m. Monday in the Hurlbut Memorial Community United Methodist Church in Chautauqua. Rev. Paul Womack officiated. Burial was in the Chautauqua Cemetery.
The family received friends from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday in the Freay Funeral Home in Mayville.
