CLV-PV rallies past Maple Grove, 44-35

CATTARAUGUS, Feb. 1 - Trailing 35-12, the Cattaraugus-Little Valley/Pine Valley wrestling team earned 32 out of a possible 36 points to rally past Maple Grove, 44-35, Thursday in Division 2 high school wrestling.

Alex Kelly helped start the comeback at 170 pounds with an 8-6 decision over Howie Nolan. After a forfeit, the Panthers' Billy Fleming pinned John Telschow at 1:53 in the 195-pound division. The match ended with three straight forfeits in favor of the Panthers for the victory.

At 132, PV-CLV's Gabe Grey earned a 17-2 technical fall over Zak Trim.

Defense shines for CLCS

MAYVILLE, Feb. 1 - The Chautauqua Lake Thunderbirds' defense shined Friday in a 45-20 victory over the Brocton Bulldogs in CCAA West II boys high school basketball.

Chautauqua Lake (5-10, 3-6) held Brocton to just six field goals and five points in the first half.

"We came out great and responded very well," Chautauqua Lake coach Michael Putney said. "I have been waiting for a breakout game and they just clicked tonight. Kyle Mayer and Ian Clute led the way and it was fun to watch."

Clute finished with a game-high 14 points and 13 rebounds to go along with four steals. AJ Hulton had six rebounds, two assists and two steals. As a team, the Thunderbirds turned the ball over just 12 times.

Aaron Riforgiato led the Bulldogs with six points.

Odell locks up win for

Panama at line

CLYMER, Feb. 1 - Dan Odell's free throw with 1.2 seconds left gave Panama some breathing room in a close win over Clymer in Division 2 West boys basketball on Friday night.

Odell's foul line connection gave Panama a 45-43 lead and Clymer tried a 3-pointer that hit the front of the rim and bounced away to give the Panthers (5-3, 9-4) a close victory.

Mitch Einink hit 1-of-2 from the foul line with 11.8 seconds remaining to get the hosts within 44-43 only to see O'Dell hit a clutch free throw near the end.

Bryce Payne and Dillon Mescall led the winners with 13 points with Payne hitting three 3-pointers and Mescall two. Dan Odell added 10 points, five rebounds and five assists.

Greg Delahoy had 11 rebounds in the win.

Jake Wiggers tallied 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds while Jared Dunnewold assisted with six boards for Clymer (3-5, 7-7). Mitch Einink and Evan Woods delivered 10 points, Matt DeStevens six assists and Wiggers also had five steals.
