Local wrestlers take to the mats in area wrestling competitions

SINCLAIRVILLE, Jan. 17 - Maple Grove won four actual matches and held on for the 46-24 victory over Cassadaga Valley in Division 2 wrestling on Friday night.

A.J. Putt gained a 14-0 major decision over Trent Merrill at 113 pounds while Brian Westerdahl, T.J. Bihler and Howie Nolan emerged with falls for Maple Grove.

Westerdahl pinned Tyler Davis in 1:29 at 152 pounds, Bihler flattened Zach Mower in 4:46 at 160 pounds and Nolan pinned Zach Myers in 1:15 at 170 pounds.

Cassadaga Valley earned forfeits wins by Daniel Torres at 120 pounds, Nick Peterson at 182 pounds, Brandon Wise at 195 pounds and Tyson Gugino at 285 pounds.

MAYVILLE, Jan. 18 - Camden went 5-0 at the inaugural Thunderbird Duals at Chautauqua Lake Central School, on Saturday, as they defeated Newfane 36-25 in the finals.

Westfield-Ripley-Chautauqua Lake finished 3-2 and took third after defeating Dunkirk-Silver Creek (2-3), 48-35. The fifth-place match went to Bath Haverling, which tied Canisius, but won the match by having the most pins. Salamanca beat Cassadaga Valley, 46-38, to take seventh place.

Camden's Thad Casler was the meet's Most Outstanding Wrestler.

The All-Tournament Team was comprised of Riley Gerber (Camden, 99 pounds), Tyler Racalto (Bath Haverling, 106), Tito Colom (Dunkirk-Silver Creek, 113), Billy Seiders (Dunkirk-Silver Creek, 113), Andrew Gelyan (Newfane, 126), Nick Hudson (WRCL, 132), Cyrus Simmons (Newfane, 138), Garrett Mitchell (Camden, 145), Nate Martin (Newfane, 152), Zack Mower (Cassadaga Valley, 160), Jake Kubala (Newfane, 160), Chad Finch (Camden, 170), Eban Torres (Cassadaga Valley, 182), Casler (195), Brad Cunningham (Salamanca, 220), Nick Jones (Dunkirk-Silver Creek, 285), Wyatt Hall (Bath Haverling, 285).
