Fredonia 54, Maple Grove 52
BEMUS POINT - Down six points heading into the fourth quarter, Fredonia (8-3, 5-0) switched its defense to a 3-2 zone and it made all the difference as the Hillbillies stormed back for a 54-52 win over CCAA West I counterpart Maple Grove (5-7, 1-3).
"They took the lead with 2:14 left in the fourth quarter," Maple Grove head coach Curt Fischer said of Fredonia. "And from there, it was a couple of nip-and-tuck buckets that sealed it. We had some opportunities, but Fredonia stood strong in that zone."
The Red Dragons jumped out to a 19-14 lead after the first quarter and took a 38-29 lead into the break. Fredonia chipped away at the Maple Grove lead in the third quarter, outscoring the Red Dragons, 14-11. In the fourth quarter, the Hillbillies held the Red Dragons to just three points to help them remain perfect in league play.
"They're a solid team that came away with a win," Fischer added of the Hillbillies. "I'm proud of my team for sticking with a good team. If there's such a thing as a good loss, that was a good loss."
Maple Grove's Corey Wefing led all scorers with 23 points while adding 10 rebounds, six steals and five assists.
Graham Soffel chipped in 16 points for the Red Dragons while Riley Beaton had nine points in the loss.
