Westfield Republican / Mayville Sentinel News

BEMUS POINT - The Thule Lodge, located at 4123 Pancake Hill Road, recently held its annual Christmas meal known as the Dopp I Gryta.

The Swedish phrase means "the dipping of the bread," and there were several kinds of bread with the meal and a dipping sauce. In addition, Swedish meatballs, korv, ham, beets, scalloped potatoes, cheeses, pickled herring and many kinds of homemade Swedish cookies were served.

The Swedish blessing was given by Allie Nelson Withers. The Thule Lodge in the Jamestown/Bemus Point area was organized 106 years ago for the Swedish immigrants as a social club.

Getting the many kinds of cookies ready to serve are Fanchon Fuller, lodge cultural leader; Bernice Veights, assistant mistress of ceremony; and Susan W. Sipos, vice chairman of the lodge.

Many of the Swedish people settled in the Jamestown area and found employment in various factories, including the many furniture factories which once existed in Jamestown. Thule Lodge continues to this day to preserve the Swedish heritage through events and activities. The recent Dopp I Gryta is one such Swedish heritage event.

Thule Lodge will not be meeting during the winter months of January and February 2014. The next business meeting will be held on Saturday, March 15, 2014, at 2 p.m. at the lodge. New members are always welcome.
