Frances A. Freay, 93, of Sea Lion Drive, Mayville, died Saturday (December 28, 2013) in her home.
She was born July 17, 1920 in Townville, PA, the daughter of the late Willis L. and Lura Hood Arnold Sr.
She was a graduate of Westminster College with a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education, and where she had been a member of the women's swimming team. During WWII she worked for the FBI in the Department of Justice in Washington, DC, in former years she had been a life guard at Mayville Lakeside Park, she had also worked at the former Kling's Furniture in Mayville. From 1952 until 1983 along with her husband, they owned and operated the Freay Funeral Home in Mayville.
Fran was a member of the Mayville United Methodist Church where she was a former Church Trustee, a member of the choir, and the Ruth Circle of the church, she was also a member of the former Acanthus Chapter 127 Order of Eastern Star's in Mayville, the Acacia Chapter 96 Order of Eastern Star's, Mayville Senior Citizens, Lake Chautauqua Memorial Post VFW Aux. in Mayville, and was a life member of the Mayville American Legion Aux.
Fran loved her family very much, and cherished the times she spent with them. She also enjoyed gardening, watching the birds especially hummingbirds, she enjoyed the lake and going out to eat.
She is survived by one son, David H. (Debbie) Freay of Mayville; four daughters, Debra (Greg) Edwards of Jamestown, Jane Loewer of Westfield, Brenda (Pete) Holl of Mayville, and Cynthia Freay of Portland; 15 grandchildren, Jim Freay, Andy Freay, Mary Jane Thomas, Sarah Edwards, Matthew Edwards, Mark Edwards, Thomas Edwards, Bill Loewer, Valerie Thomas, Bob Loewer, Julie Loewer, Colleen Holl, Celeste Holl, Emily Hanson, and Wilson Hanson; 15 great grandchildren; one brother, Willis L. Arnold Jr. of Spearfish, SD.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold L. Freay whom she married November 10, 1943 in Falconer, NY and who died July 11, 2004; two sisters, May Jones Bunting, and Helen Frey; one brother, Joseph W. Arnold.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, in the Freay Funeral Home, Mayville. Rev. Mark Parsons will officiate. Burial will be in the Mayville Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.
Acacia Chapter Order of Eastern Star's will hold a memorial service at 4:00 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.
