CLCS students support winter clothing drive

November 28, 2013
Westfield Republican / Mayville Sentinel News

Chautauqua Lake Central School students joined faculty members in a project to make "smittens" to support a winter clothing drive that continues through Wednesday, Dec. 4. The annual drive is sponsored by the junior class in cooperation with the Salvation Army of Western New York and in partnership with two other student organizations, Sources of Strength and Peer Educators.

Teacher Rachel Swan introduced the project, in which old sweaters are re-purposed into new mittens outfitted with fleece linings.

The mittens will be distributed along with new hats, scarves and gently-used winter jackets to area children in need.

Using paper patterns, juniors Laiken Biekert (left) and Kourtney Shearer cut the fleece lining pieces for “smittens,” new mittens re-purposed from old sweaters.

Members of the CLCS National Honor Society will also make the holidays brighter for local children and families through the organization's annual food drive and Community Christmas Project, which continues through Dec. 13.

The students are collecting donations from students and staff throughout the school and from the larger community. NHS members will wrap gifts of clothing, toys and games for the children and will assemble a carton of non-perishable food for each family.
