WACS warm coat drive a success

November 28, 2013
Westfield Republican / Mayville Sentinel News

A new event has emerged at Westfield Academy & Central School. Yearbook Production students of Kimberly Abbey recently held a "Warm Coat Drive" for the members of the Westfield community. "I made the initial contact to find out where we could put the coats to good use and my students took it from there." commented Abbey.

The Yearbook Production class has held a "Prom Dress Shop" in the Spring for the past two years, where students can come in and find a prom dress for free. They plan on holding it again this year. "These dresses are like new," said Abbey, "We have girls come in for Prom dresses, eight grade celebration and even some who look to Homecoming in the fall."

Yearbook Editors Erin Carutis and Megan Fisher organized the drive and appointed senior Erica Vicary to oversee the running of the event. Yearbook students made posters advertising for the halls of WACS and wrote announcements that were read to students and staff each morning. They also wrote a community event piece for The Westfield Republican and used social media to get the word out of the coat drive. In addition, the students held an open community drop off on a Saturday morning. "I've been involved with the Prom Dress Shop for the past two years and I will definitely be again this year. The warm coat drive was another way to try and help our community members," said Carutis.

The WACS yearbook production class, pictured above, recently held a warm coat drive to benefit members of the Westfield community.

Students collected over 50 coats and were able to give some immediately and the rest were given to Union Relief to distribute.

The class would like to thank everyone who donated coats as well as Katie Smith of the YWCA and Gloria Hayes, Loreen Ginnitti and Janet Greene from Union Relief for their help with the event. "They pointed us in the right direction and answered our many questions. They were a great help and we couldn't have been as successful without them." commented Ms. Vicary.
