WESTFIELD Who would have thought that the third weekend in November would be so busy in the small town of Westfield? This Victorian village, first settled in the early 1800s, and now the geographic center of Lake Erie Wine Country's winery trail, will have several events to welcome visitors for the holidays.
Thanksgiving Open House at the Winery and more
At the winery, Johnson Estate will be hosting its Thanksgiving Open House, Nov. 22-24 and will share food, recipes and wine pairings with its loyal customers. Winery tours, with owner Frederick Johnson, will also be available each day at 1 and 3 p.m. November also marks the commencement of the winery's annual holiday free shipping program for full cases to any of 38 states, to coincide with the beginning of the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.
In the village of Westfield, visitors can take advantage of the popular annual Holly Tour of homes decorated for the season on Sunday, Nov.24, and the Victorian Craft Show at Eason Hall and the McClurg Museum's High Tea, both offered on Saturday, Nov.23.
Twelve Days of
Christmas, Dec. 13-24th
Tree Lighting, Dec. 13, and "Inspired" food and wine pairings.
Most know the popular Christmas carol, the Twelve Days of Christmas, and Johnson Estate has taken inspiration from this traditional song for its own 2013 holiday celebration. The winery will commence itsTwelve Days of Christmas on Dec.13, just 12 days before the official holiday, with a lighting of its 15-foot Christmas tree at 5 p.m. The winery will also serve on that day, the first of 12 days of wine and food pairings. Inspired by the song's line "On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me a partridge in a pear tree," the winery will be serving Spiced Pear Cake and White Ipocras. On Sunday, Dec.15 for example, the winery will pair French Walnut Chocolate Coffee Cake with Chambourcin Ice Wine (Three French Hens). A full description of the menu is available online at www.JohnsonWinery.com. There is no charge for this event.
Raffle and Gingerbread House Contest
The celebrations will also feature a Gingerbread House Contest, open to the public. We will make one or two gingerbread houses and invite the public to enter their own houses any time after Dec. 13 but before Dec. 21. On Saturday, Dec. 21, we will award the consumers' choice for Best Gingerbread House and will return all houses to their owners. Saturday, Dec. 21 is intended to be family-friendly, and will feature Hot Chocolate, Mulled Wine, and Christmas cookies. We will also announce the winner of the Raffle (attendance not necessary). Tickets will be given for any purchases made in the winery from Nov. 22 to Dec. 20. Prizes may include a large wine gift basket and freshly-cut Christmas trees.
