Wally Huckno, chairperson of Jamestown Community College’s board of trustees, introduces Cory Duckworth, JCC president, during an inauguration ceremony held Friday.

On Friday, a ceremony installing Dr. Cory Duckworth, J.D., as JCC president was hosted in the Robert Lee Scharmann Theatre on the college's Jamestown campus.

Representatives from several area and State University of New York colleges and universities, as well as area elected officials, joined Duckworth and JCC's regional board of trustees on stage for the 2:30 p.m. ceremony. Several members of Duckworth's personal and professional family were also in attendance to witness the public display of his appointment to the position.

"I am deeply gratified by the warm and welcoming reception that (my wife) Elva and I have received in accepting the honor and responsibility of becoming the eighth president of Jamestown Community College," Duckworth said. "For me, and hopefully for all of us, today's inaugural events are convened in recognition of all that is significant about JCC. These ceremonial proceedings are intended as a celebration of the progress and contributions - past, present and future - of this great institution of higher learning."

JCC's former president Gregory DeCinque, who retired in August, was also in attendance and was recognized for his accomplishments in leading the college for 19 years. Although he took over the presidential reins from DeCinque more than two months ago, Duckworth said he is already looking forward to the limitless possibilities awaiting JCC in the not-so-distant future.

"After spending 10 weeks at the helm of Jamestown Community College, I am more optimistic and encouraged than ever that our pages of history will fully compliment the inspirations of days gone by. We have within our reach, all the crucial ingredients needed for success," Duckworth said.

Prior to Duckworth's comments, a near-capacity crowd was addressed by a number of representatives from both JCC and other institutions, including: Darryl Bray, president of the Cattaraugus campus student senate; Reynaldo Muniz, president of the Jamestown campus student senate; Johanna Duncan-Poitier, senior vice chancellor for community colleges and the education pipeline, and representative of SUNY chancellor Nancy Zimpher; Dr. William Sederburg, who was the keynote speaker and is the retired Utah commissioner for higher education; Wally Huckno, chairperson of JCC's board of trustees; Dr. Gerard Crinnin, chair of the faculty and professor of English at JCC's North County Center; and Paula Snyder, director of college health services.

Following remarks from his introductory address, Huckno provided Duckworth with a specially designed president's medal to be worn at formal college ceremonies.

The ceremony was presided over by Jeanne Johnston, a faculty member in the social sciences and business division.

Duckworth's appointment as JCC president by the board of trustees in August followed a national search conducted by a committee comprised of JCC faculty, staff and community members. The announcement of Duckworth's selection by the search committee was originally made in May.
