October 31, 2013
Westfield Republican / Mayville Sentinel News

Westfield Academy & Central School Academic All Stars were recently honored at a luncheon on October 24, 2013, at Quagliana's Bark Grill. Academic All Stars must achieve high honor roll status (94.50 100%) in three of the four previous marking periods.

Mr. Martin Oakes, Middle and High School Special Education teacher, was this year's guest speaker. He spoke to the students about setting goals, hard work, and dedication. He told of a teacher he had in high school who inspired and motivated him to be where he is today. Mr. Oakes also spoke of the challenging choices the senior students will face as they go off to college next year. "It comes down to where you want to be", he told the students. "You have a great start with your hard work while in high school. Keep that thought and continue that great start for your life." Mr. Oakes also acknowledged the students high academic achievement along with the many various extra-curricular, employment, sports, music, and family activities they are involved in. He also shared some personal high school academic experiences which the students not only enjoyed hearing but also showed them that their goals and dreams can be attained. Mr. Oakes ended his talk by sharing a "recipe for success" that had been given to him when he was pursing his dreams and once again congratulating our outstanding students.

Academic Award students were honored in September at an Academic Awards Assembly for all students in grades 9-12. Those students who achieved Merit Roll, Honor Roll, High Honor Roll and Academic All Star status were individually recognized both in a video and bios of each individual student were read during the assembly. Parents of the Academic Award winners were invited to the cafeteria for a Continental breakfast reception prepared by Patty Benton, WACS Cafeteria Manager. Ms. Kimberly Abbey, Business Education teacher, is the Academic Awards advisor.
