Maple Grove records first win of season

Oct. 10 - BEMUS POINT - Hope Zielinski's six kills, 25 points, two aces, one dig and as many blocks was not enough as the Cassadaga Valley Lady Cougars (1-14, 1-8) fell to Maple Grove (1-13, 1-12), 12-25, 25-17, 23-25, 25-22, 25-12, Thursday in CCAA West II girls high school volleyball.

It was Maple Grove's first win of the season.

Brooke Johnson added six assists and one dig while Alyssa Hahn had 10 assists and three digs in defeat.

The Lady Red Dragons were led by Nicole Hemminger's 10 kills, Sierra Sperenza's three kills and 16 digs. Jazmine Hanold had 14 assists, eight digs and 23 digs and Maddy Russo had 12 digs and nine aces in the win.

Fredonia sweeps Brocton/Westfield

Oct. 10 - WESTFIELD - The Fredonia Lady Hillbillies (4-5, 8-9) took care of the Brocton-Westfield Lady Bulldogs (1-7, 4-11) in three games to take the victory 27-25, 25-17, 25-15 in CCAA West I girls volleyball Thursday.

Maddy Crandall had 11 assists in the victory while Mackenzie Tarnowski recorded eight kills, six aces and two blocks.

Lea Ritthir led the Lady Hillbillies with 18 digs and also added three aces.

Lindsay Harp had five kills and three blocks for the Bulldogs. Parson Hauser added seven assists and one ace in the loss.

Skinner paces Westfield-Brocton offense in win over Dunkirk

Oct. 9 - WESTFIELD - Dan Skinner scored two goals and added two assists as the Westfield-Brocton Wolverines (5-3-3, 3-3-3) took down the Dunkirk Marauders (1-11-1, 1-9), 6-0, Wednesday in CCAA West boys high school soccer.

"Dan has absolutely wonderful foot skill," Westfield-Brocton coach Jay Pikiewicz said. "He has a good touch on the ball and he shined."

Bryce Bentham put the home team on the board off a feed from Dylan Robinson. Christian Fuentes made the score 2-0 off a feed from Bentham. Chris Cockram scored the Wolverines' third goal before halftime. Skinner was credited with the assist.

In the second half, Skinner took over as he scored two straight goals and had an assist on the team's sixth goal, scored by Dylan Robinson. Robinson also had an assist on Skinner's first goal.

"We are finally getting into the groove and getting our health back," Pikiewicz said.

Ty Bentham was the winning goalie with 10 saves. Meanwhile, Dunkirk's Gianni DeJesus and Nick Thompson split time between the pipes in a losing effort.

Trojans Trim MG, Clinch Division Title

Oct. 9 - Thanks to Eric Priester and Nick Cooper, undefeated Southwestern (12-0-2) claimed the West Division boys soccer title for the second year in a row on Wednesday night.

Priester racked up his eighth shutout of the season with six saves and Cooper headed in the only goal off a corner kick from Tristan Desnerck to give the Trojans a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Maple Grove.

Cooper's goal came at 23:50 of the first half and was the only blemish for Maple Grove goalie Kyle Richardson, who made six saves.

Strong first half lifts Maple Grove past Dunkirk

Oct. 8 - DUNKIRK - Ema Franczak scored two first-half goals to aid the Maple Grove Lady Red Dragons (10-2) to a 7-1 victory over Dunkirk (1-11) on Tuesday in CCAA West girls high school soccer.

Olivia Richarson, Sarah Pardue and Emily Swanson each netted first-half goals as the visitors jumped out to a 5-0 halftime lead.

In the second half, the Lady Red Dragons received a goal from Katie Braund.

Dunkirk avoided the shutout a minute later as Emilee Hanlon scored on a penalty kick.

Maple Grove's Chloe Kibbe scored with three minutes left to round out the scoring.

Brianne Davis was the winning goalie with four saves while Aimee Kaufman made 18 saves in defeat.

"The team as a whole understands their mistakes and are working very hard in practice to correct them," Dunkirk coach Phil Cook said. "We have four games left to have some success. Hopefully their hard work will pay off soon."

Genovese nets two as Lady Billies down Lady T'birds

Oct. 10 - MAYVILLE - Morgan Genovese scored two goals as the Fredonia Lady Hillbillies (9-3) rallied past Chautauqua Lake, 2-1, Thursday in CCAA West girls high school soccer.

The Lady Thunderbirds got on the board first as Sarah Russin scored five minutes into the game for the early 1-0 lead.

However, with 1:47 left in the first half, Genovese took it all the way herself and rifled a shot for the 1-1 equalizer.

In the second half, Fredonia's Emily Valvo delivered a cross pass which Aleyna Szot was able to tip the ball to Genovese, who put it home for the 2-1 win.

The Lady Hillbillies peppered Chautauqua Lake goalie Rachel Fortney with 22 shots.

Alex Zentz was the winning goalie with four saves.

Girls Tennis

CCAA tennis semifinals set

Oct. 10 - LAKEWOOD - The singles and doubles semifinalists have been determined for the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association girls tennis tournament at the Lakewood Family YMCA.

All of the semifinalists have qualified for the Section 6 Tournament at the Village Glen Tennis Club in Williamsville on Oct. 25 and 26.

The singles semifinal pairings today at 11 a.m. are Heidi Mueller of Southwestern against Chloe Knapp of Jamestown, and Morgan Johnson of Southwestern against Georgie Gens of Fredonia.

The double semifinals will also be held at 11 a.m. Victoria VanEvery and Elizabeth Rowan of Falconer will take on Corrine Cardinale and Paige Bentham of Maple Grove, and Leigh Yartz and Mikayla Johnson of Southwestern will meet Rosemarie Mole and Emily Hair of Frewsburg.
