Prominent architect, author, and scholar returns to Westfield

September 26, 2013
Westfield Republican / Mayville Sentinel News

Westfield residents, Bob and Sheila Keller have invited Dr. Brian Brace Taylor and his wife Teresa to be their guests at their home on West Main Street "The Bungalow." The home was commissioned by Taylor's grandparents Edgar and Margaret Taylor in 1911. The architect and builder was O. S. Lang who also designed and built the Dr. Welch home in Westfield, designed and developed communities and homes on Chautauqua Lake that include: the Chedwel Community, the Maple Springs Church, Boy's Club facility and several prominent residences in Chautauqua Institution and Maple Springs.

O. S. Lang's crowning achievement however, was his role as builder and project manager for two of Buffalo's most notable homes, the Darwin D. Martin House and the William R. Heath House, both Frank Lloyd Wright designed. O. S. was an architect, builder, developer, marketing pioneer and negotiator as well as a fastidious planner and craftsman. He became famous for his attention to details that were often in direct conflict with the free style approach of Frank Lloyd Wright.

It is only recently that the architectural links between Buffalo and Chautauqua County have been discovered and hopefully Taylor can help shed light on the role his family played in attracting O. S. Lang to Westfield and Chautauqua County.

On the weekend of Sept. 20, Taylor visited several of the known O. S. Lang sites to evaluate their architectural and historic relevance. We are also hoping to enlist his ongoing support of our community in O. S. Lang related projects in the future. (Preliminary plans are in the works for possible speakers programs, articles, books, History Channel documentary and the development of an "O.S. Lang/Bungalow Trail" that would include information, tours, and guides to O. S. Lang sites in Chautauqua County).

Dr Brian Brace Taylor books include: "Pierre Chareau: Designer and Architect", "Miguel Angel Roca", "Le Corbusier: The City of Refuge, Paris 1929/33", "Geoffrey Bawa". If you have information, artifacts or time to volunteer in our quest to uncover more O. S. Lang links to Chautauqua please contact Bob Keller at 412 877 2615.
