International Coastal Cleanup set for Sept. 21

September 19, 2013
Westfield Republican / Mayville Sentinel News

The 2013 International Coastal Cleanup day is Sept. 21 and marks the 28th year the Great Lakes Beach Sweep has participated in this important, annual event. After the large scale destruction caused by super storm Sandy, this year more than ever, we need your help in cleaning the shores, rivers, beaches, lakes, streams and shorelines of marine debris.

Last year 5,645 volunteers removed 62,633 pounds of debris from 244 miles of New York shoreline. If you would like to see the results of the 2012 New York State Beach Cleanup, please visit the Cleanup Site at All your hard work and enthusiasm is greatly appreciated and we hope we can count on you again this year to join our effort.

This event has proven to be a significant activity for school children from elementary grades to college. Please encourage any educator or scout leader you know to participate either at your cleanup site or to contact me for a site of their own. Cleanups are not only about trash. Cleanups are really about people making a difference and having an impact on the environment.
