August 29, 2013
Westfield Republican / Mayville Sentinel News

Week of Aug. 22 -Enough men showed up at the Pinehurst Golf Club to form a field of five foursomes. The competition was in the format known as a "shamble" where all team members hit a tee shot - the best is chosen and each golfer plays out the hole from that spot. The best three scores on each hole are used to come up with the tally for the team.

Placing first with a score of 115 were Les Yokom, Gene Noble, John Jones and Trenny Jordan. In second was the foursome of Jim Quinn, Dick Furman, Bill Christ and Bob Rogers with a total of 119.

In third place at 120, and out of the money, was the team of Bill Ottaway, Dave Holser, Butch Joint and

Ray Cenni. Rounding out the scoring was the foursome of Bob Lokietek, Jim Higginbotham, Vinny Paternosh and Todd Swanson at 129.

In a league of their own was the team of Bill Cole, Steve Woleben, Mel Allen and Rick Lawson who played a different format and were thus disqualified.

Solo awards went to the following men:

Longest putt made on No. 1: Butch Joint

Closest to the pin on No. 4: Gene Noble

Closest to the pin on No. 7: Les Yokom

Week of Aug. 29 - Four foursomes and three threesomes joined the weekly competition at the Pinehurst Golf Club today. It just so happened that the treesomes took the top three places.

Scoring a nine hole round of six under par was the trio of Keith Rothwell, Dave Holser and Marty Gollnitz to capture first place. Trenny Jordan, Sam Arcadipane and Bob Rogers shot four under to claim second spot. With a birdie on the third to break a tie the team of Bill Cole, Ray Lewis and John Jones scored three under and placed third to take the last of the team prize money.

Bill Ottaway, Todd Swanson, Butch Joint and Jim Higginbotham also were at three under to end up in fourth place.

Another three under round was the score for Bob Lokietek, Harry Barton, Les Yokom and Rick Lawson to wind up fifth.

Two teams shot one under par scores to take the last two spots:

Sixth - Jim Quinn, Lou Barresi, Dick Furman and Ray Cenni

Seventh - Bill Christ, Steve Woleben, Gene Noble and Vinny Paternosh

Closest to the pin on No. 4 was Swanson and on No. 7 Gollnitz. Closest to the pin on the second shot on No. 8 was Rogers. Worth a mention - after a lengthy drive by Yokom which cleared the green on No. 5, Barton chipped in for an eagle.
