Always remember basic pool safety

July 18, 2013
Westfield Republican / Mayville Sentinel News

Summer is in full swing and with it comes the inevitable reminders that we must take precautions to keep the summer fun and enjoyable.

Chautauqua County has dozens of options for outdoor recreation that can be enjoyed safely. But, it doesn't take much for accidents to happen, something we were reminded of often over the long Fourth of July weekend.

On July 6, a Jamestown youth was swimming in Lake Erie in Westfield when he drowned. Members of the county Sheriff's Department Dive Team pulled the youth out of the water, but he passed away at Women's and Children's Hospital in Buffalo.

Summer isn't a time to forget about basic safety. Pools and lakes are a great place to cool off on a hot, muggy Chautauqua County day. For swimmers, observing a few basic safety tips, such as swimming only in designated areas supervised by lifeguards, always swimming with a buddy, knowing how to use a life jacket and being cautious around natural bodies of water including ocean shoreline, rivers and lakes can make time on Lake Erie or Chautauqua Lake much safer.

Whether swimming or boating, on one of the area's many playgrounds or driving, it pays for all of us to remember common sense rules and be aware of potential risks.

Enjoy the summer safely.
