WESTFIELD - Spoon Man visits Patterson Library on Monday, July 1 as part of the "Dig into Reading" 2013 Summer Program.

The program kicked off on June 24 with "The Great Patterson Treasure Hunt." Children of all ages found treasures, played games and made creative crafts. The library's special guest lineup also includes magician and clown combo Charlie and Checkers on Monday, July 8, storyteller Annemarie Jason on Monday, July 15 and Omnipresent Puppet Theater on Monday, July 22. All special events are held at 11:15 a.m.

This year there is something for all age groups, from babies to adults, and it's all free. Parents are invited to register their children at the library or online at www.pattersonlibrary.info. The program runs through Thursday, Aug. 1, concluding with a finale picnic in Moore Park. Weekly story and activity times for children of all ages will encourage them to continue to explore, discover and learn throughout the summer months.

Library Director Eli Guinnee says over 170 children and teens have already signed up.

"What a great start to the summer this has been," Guinnee said. "Every year we seem to have more and more children enjoying all that Patterson has to offer."

This year each child will have a book log, which challenges them to read books and complete activities. For every activity they do, or book they read, the children will receive a pirate coin, which they can keep in their own "booty bag." The coins can then be used to purchase prizes from "Treasure Island."

Weekly meeting are 45 minutes long, meeting on the following schedule: 0 to 36 months meets Thursdays at 9:30 a.m. led by Amy Stephenson; 3 years old to kindergarten meets Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. led by Stephenson; first and second grades meets Tuesdays at 9:15 a.m. led by Sarah Funka; third and fourth grades meet Tuesdays at 10:15 a.m. led by Funka; fifth and sixth grades meet Mondays at 10:15 a.m. led by Guinnee; and seventh and eighth grades meet in the teen area on Mondays at noon led by Karin Cockram. Grades above are the grades the children will be going into next school year

Adults are not left out. Patterson's Summer Reading Program for Grown Ups is now open for registration. Like last year, participants are encouraged to register online by going to www.pattersonlibrary.info and following the links. Adults who read three books and write three reviews this summer will be eligible for a prize and to attend the finale party on Sept. 5. Paper registrations are also available at Patterson Library.
