WESTFIELD - Westfield Academy and Central School announces its valedictorian and salutatorian for the graduating class of 2013.
Kristin Grohol, WACS Class of 2013 valedictorian, is the daughter of Mark and Sue Grohol. She is motivated to succeed by the opportunities the future holds. She has endeavored during her time at WACS to pursue all of her goals, and her parents have been her biggest motivators. They are always there to encourage her, but also to pick her back up when she doesn't meet a goal she has set for herself. In addition to being the valedictorian, she has earned Rochester University's Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony Award, has made the JCC part time students' dean's list, was a part of Cavalcade of Music in Colorado with Westwinds, was named JCC College Connections Student of the Year, earned WACS academic awards, was a Rotary Club student of the month, won Westwinds Gold with Distinction at NYSSMA, earned a place on the honor roll all through high school, was selected to perform at All-County for band, was a WACS student of the month, has been inducted into the National Honor Society and more. She is part of the Environmental Club, Jazz Club, Westwind, Firecrackers, and takes dance classes at Center Stage Dance Studio. She is vice president for her class. Grohol is also involved in community service, and among other activities, has participated in the 30-Hour Famine, the Methodist Church Christmas Eve Service, the Westfield Women's Organization Holly Tour and dance performances for residents at Absolut Care. This summer she will be employed at the Afterwords Cafe in the Chautauqua Institution. Her future plans are to attend Barnard College to pursue a degree in international relations. She would also like to spend time studying abroad. She would like to thank all of the teachers at WACS for their encouragement and support over the years.
Westfield's salutatorian, Daniel Tofil, is the son of Edward and Joanne Tofil. He has been motivated to succeed his whole life, as his parents have always encouraged a good work ethic. A perfectionist, Tofil always strove to keep straight As on all of his assignments. He never gets tired of feeling accomplished. He is very proud of being accepted into the National Honor Society, being an Academic All Star, the May Westfield/Mayville Rotary Student of the Month, a 1st team volleyball all-star, earning an honorable mention for soccer and earning an honorable mention for basketball. He has held several leadership positions, such as basketball captain, soccer co-captain, and volleyball captain. He enjoys playing sports, riding ATVs, camping, running and being outdoors. He has engaged in community service like baseball field maintenance, being a soccer ball boy and participating in the youth basketball clinic. His favorite teachers over the years have been Mrs. Snyder from third grade, who made learning fun; and Mr. Pikiewicz from tenth grade and the soccer team, because he was both a role model and a friend to Tofil. Tofil's future plans are to attend Nazareth College in Rochester in the fall and to continue his athletic career there. He will major in biology, leading into the more specific field of marine biology. He would like to help animals in whatever way he can, and his dream job would be to work with nature doing something he loves.
