Members of the Brocton Central and Westfield Academy and Central School Boards of Education both overwhelmingly supported taking the next step along the path to a consolidation of the districts.

Both districts approved holding an advisory referendum, or straw vote, on Tuesday, June 18.

Tuesday night, May 21, school boards in both districts met after their districts' respective budget votes.

On each district's agenda was a resolution to approve scheduling a vote.

In Brocton all board members were present at the meeting and all board members voted for the resolution.

Westfield Superintendent David Davison reported Ed LeBarron was unable to attend the meeting, but the eight remaining members voted for the resolution.

The resolutions noted, "The Commissioner of Education will not take formal action to authorize a reorganization of school districts unless there is evidence of support in each of the districts included in the proposed reorganization." This means if either district does not approve the reorganization during this non-binding resolution, the process stops.

Both districts will vote between the hours of noon and 8 p.m. In Westfield the location of the vote is the foyer by the high school auditorium. In Brocton, the location is the foyer by the high school gymnasium.

Both resolutions state that "any qualified voter of the District is eligible to vote pursuant to the same procedures and standards used in conjunction with the District's annual vote and election."

According to Brocton Superintendent John Hertlein, "I will be working very hard with mini meetings throughout the community. Dave Davison will set up meetings in his area."

Provided the straw vote is positive in both districts, steps can be taken for a binding vote in October 2013.
