Free Taekwondo classes

Taekwondo classes will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the summer months. Classes for students 8 to 15 will begin at 5:30 p.m. each night with the 16 through adults meeting at 6:30 p.m. both evenings as well. Instructor Alberto Ramirez is a native of Spain and has a background in military training, extensive experience in private security and several advanced degrees in the marital arts field. New students receive their first month free. The class fee is $40 per month, payable at the beginning of each month. To register for the class, inquire about family discounts or learn more details, contact the YWCA at 326-2011.

Self-defense for women

Self-defense classes for women are scheduled each Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. To accommodate student requests, the class will continue until 9:30 p.m., but the option to leave at 9 p.m. is available. The class is designed for ladies over the age of 14 and is focused on awareness, avoidance tactics and the development of techniques that can be used for protection. Students are asked to wear loose comfortable clothing and be prepared to engage in physical activity and contact. The monthly fee is $35 per student with new students being offered their initial month free, and family discounts offered. To register for the class, call the YWCA.

Fitness center

Installation of new cardio equipment at the YWCA fitness center is nearing completion.

"We are working with Advantage Sport and Fitness Company to coordinate delivery of several new pieces," YWCA ED Katie Smith said. "We plan to open the fitness center for free use to members, offer some special deals and incentives and roll out new policies and procedures over the next month. Members are encouraged to check their emails, watch the YWCA Facebook page or check the notices posted throughout the fitness center for updates."

Pancake supper

In cooperation with the local McDonalds, the YWCA will be selling tickets for a Tuesday, June 4 pancake supper. Tickets will be available at the main office of the YWCA and all YWCA child care sites beginning Monday, May 20. Tickets are $3 each for all-you-can-eat pancakes. Dinner will be served from 4 to 7 p.m. and is dine in only. All tickets are pre-sale only. None will be sold at the door. Proceeds from the ticket sales will support the child services at the YWCA.

Father Daughter Dance

The YWCA is pleased to announce tickets for the annual Father Daughter Dance will go on sale Monday, May 20, at the YWCA. Ticket price is $20 per couple and are pre-sale only. None will be available at the door. The dance will be held Saturday, June 15 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the YWCA gym. Young ladies ages kindergarten through fifth grade and their dads are invited to enjoy an evening of dancing. Grandfathers, uncles, cousins, brothers and other older adults are welcome as escorts as well. Refreshments will be served and each couple will be presented with a keepsake photo.

Arts and Crafts Festival

The 2013 dates for the YWCA Arts and Crafts Festival are set for Friday, July 26 and Saturday, July 27. This long running show will be held in Moore Park, rain or shine. Spaces remain and artists with high quality, hand crafted items for sale are encouraged to contact the YWCA at 326-2011 for an application and information packet. Entertainment in the gazebo is being offered and any groups interested in performing Friday or Saturday afternoon are invited to contact the Y.

"Each year this event grows, brings in something new and exciting and engages the entire community," board chair Ivy Higginbotham said. "For us it's a family volunteer opportunity and I encourage others to contact the YWCA and learn about being a part of this great weekend."

Facility rental

A variety of rooms are available for rent at the YWCA. Overnight accommodations can be arranged. The large assembly room, the living room and the kitchen can all be reserved for private parties and special occasion celebrations.
