CHAUTAUQUA - A horse and rider were allegedly struck by two vehicles on Monday, May 6.

According to the police office, a trooper responded to a call of a woman thrown from a horse on State Route 430 in Town of Chautauqua by Arrow Mart in Hartfield. Upon arrival, an investigation revealed the horse and rider were allegedly traveling eastbound on State Route 430 when an approaching truck, also traveling eastbound, struck the horse. The rider was allegedly thrown, and an oncoming car traveling westbound allegedly avoided the horse, but a second vehicle traveling westbound allegedly struck the horse. A witness stated the horse and rider were allegedly traveling next to the yellow line. The rider was flown to Hamot Hospital in Erie, Pa. The first driver was allegedly not injured and signed off with EMS. The driver of second vehicle was also allegedly not injured. The victim was allegedly unable to give clear statement of what happened. The horse was pronounced dead. It does not appear the victim had been wearing a helmet.
