WESTFIELD - Clyde E. "Denny" Kittle, age 99, of Westfield, died Thursday morning, April 18, 2013, at Absolut Care of Westfield in Westfield, N.Y.

Clyde was born on Dec. 12, 1913, in Margaretville, N.Y., the son of the late Edward J. and Lottie (Reside) Kittle.

Born and raised in Margaretville, "Denny" was a 1932 graduate of Margaretville High School.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1941 to 1946 during World War II. Clyde enjoyed a distinguished military career with the U.S. Army AG's office and then with the STAT Control of the Army Air Corps during World War II earning the rank of Lt. Colonel prior to his retirement.

Upon his discharge, he continued his career in computers with IBM Corp., where he had been employed prior to the war. While with IBM, he was assigned to the Jamestown, N.Y., office and was in charge of all sales and installations of IBM equipment in Chautauqua and Cattaraugus Counties of New York as well as five counties in northwest Pennsylvania. Local assignments included Welch Foods and Ajax, Inc. He enjoyed his 29 years of service with IBM, retiring in 1971.

Clyde had been active in many civic affairs including the Jamestown Babe Ruth Organization and the Jamestown Optimist Club and had been a member of the John W. Rogers Post 327 American Legion of Westfield.

He enjoyed golf, deer hunting and traveling. But most of all, he enjoyed his family. Upon his retirement from IBM, he and his wife, Erma, moved to Sarasota, Fla., where they enjoyed many wonderful years of retirement living. He returned to Western New York following her death. Kittle was a member of First Presbyterian Church and Society of Westfield.

Survivors include his two sons, Thomas (Linda) Kittle of Blanchester, Ohio and Gerald "Jerry" (Barbara) Kittle of Westfield, N.Y.; his one daughter, Janet K. Snow of Westfield, N.Y.; his seven grandchildren, Sean Kittle, Jason (Monica) Traverse, Minda VanLeeuwen, Cpt. Christopher J. Kittle, U.S. Army and his wife Abbey, Erin (Ryan) Dipzinski, Stephanie (Casey) Woodruff and Andrew (Laura) Hamm; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Clyde was preceded in death by his wife, Erma I. (Moore) Kittle, whom he married on Oct. 18, 1941, in Washington, D.C., and who died on June 16, 2001; his daughter, Karen J. Kittle; and his brother, Arthur Kittle.

Friends called from 4 to 6 p.m., on Sunday, April 21 at the Mason Funeral Home, 37 Clinton St., Westfield, N.Y., and were invited to attend the funeral services there on Monday morning, April 22 at 11 a.m., with Rev. Stephen Morse officiating. Burial with full military honors was in Union Cemetery, Westfield. Memorials may be made to a charity of choice.
