WESTFIELD - The annual Caring and Sharing Food Drive was held from Dec. 3 through 7, 2012 for Westfield Academy and Central School students in grades kindergarten through 12.
Grades kindergarten through fifth collected a total of 1,455 food items, and grades sixth through 12th collected a total of 931 food items for a total of 2,386 items. The school's can drive is the single largest donation the Union Relief gets throughout the year. All the food is redistributed to families in the village and town.
Each year, the middle and high school students hold a friendly competition pitting the three middle school grades against each other. This year, the seventh grade won. Its reward was a two-sided sword. The students received a pizza and wing party sponsored by the middle school student government. On the other hand, since the seventh grade won the competition, it had to repackage the items and load them into the trucks for delivery.
The seventh grade class at Westfield Academy and Central School won the opportunity to load food items collected during the annual Caring and Sharing Food Drive because it brought in the most items among middle school classes.
In the high school competition, all first block classes were pitted against each other. This year, Neil Huber's 12th grade government class won. This class alone collected just over 300 items. It also received a pizza and wing party sponsored by the high school student government.
The school would like to thank Larry Spacc Resale Center of Westfield for the use of a driver and truck for delivery.
