Cloudy rank for groundhogs

February 13, 2013
Westfield Republican / Mayville Sentinel News

Dunkirk Dave gave the region some welcome news on Saturday morning: spring is on the way.

But Dave is just not as appreciated as he should be on a national level. Despite a photo of the groundhog with his handler Bob Will taken by a local daily newspaper going national last year - it even hit the Los Angeles Times - Dave's ranking is a disappointing no. 4, according to the Weather Channel.

Coming in first was Punxsutawney Phil of Punxsutawney, Pa., followed by Staten Island Chuck and General Beauregard Lee of Lilburn, Ga.

"I don't get it," Will said of the ratings.

We don't either. Dave's accuracy rate is better than the groundhog at No. 1 and where does winter have a bigger impact - Dunkirk, Staten Island or Lilburn, Ga.?

If you are a regular viewer of The Weather Channel, you know its forecasts - while fairly accurate - are not perfect. The channel's rankings for groundhogs seem to fall in that same category.
