Elaine Carole Duink Caflisch

Elaine Carole Duink Caflisch passed away on Jan. 29, 2013, surrounded by her loving family in Clymer, N.Y., after an extremely hard fought battle with breast cancer.

She was born at Corry Memorial Hospital on Aug. 26, 1960, to Clayton and Avalon Duink of Clymer, N.Y. Elaine married Bryan S. Caflisch on July 17, 1982.

She graduated from Clymer Central School in 1978. She graduated from SUNY at Fredonia with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and history and graduated from Edinboro with a Master of Arts degree. Elaine had over 30 years of teaching experience and most recently taught English to middle school students at Clymer Central School. Elaine had also taught at St. Thomas Catholic School in Corry, Pa., and at Sherman Central School in Sherman, N.Y. Elaine loved to teach young and old, and she especially loved correcting one's English.

Elaine showed how to live life to the fullest even while battling cancer. She was a past president, as well as a board member, of the Clymer French Creek Free Library Association, a parishioner at Christ Our Hope Catholic Church and directed Clymer Central School plays in the past, Summer Songfest, the Memorial Peace Award and the Holocaust Class with their Washington D.C. trips. She was active in numerous Relays for Life, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walks and completed the Susan G. Koeman 60-mile three day walk in Cleveland, Ohio, even before learning she had breast cancer. Elaine was a faithful member of Girls Night Out, Scrap and Sew Weekends and was active in the Clymer Tulip Festival Celebration.

She was the mother of three children, Captain Scott R. Caflisch (Kate) currently stationed at Fort Sill, Okla., Carolanne R. Keim (Michael) of Fairmont, W.V., and Anna Daina of Bergamo, Italy; brother, Robert L. Duink (Beth) of Chittenango, N.Y.; sisters, Barbara A. Duink (Pikkie) of Falcon, Colo., and Elizabeth M. Phelps (Tim) of Clymer, N.Y.; and mother-in-law, Elizabeth Caflisch of Clymer, N.Y.

Calling hours were from 2 to 4 p.m. and 8 to 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 30 and from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 31 at the Abb Reformed Church in Clymer, N.Y. A memorial mass was held at 11 a.m. at St. Matthias Catholic Church, French Creek, N.Y., on Friday, Feb. 1 with Fr. John Trela, Celebrant. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Clymer Fire Department, Clymer French Creek Free Library or Christ our Hope Church in French Creek, N.Y., in Elaine's name.
