Update on Cottage Street fire

January 23, 2013
By DAVID?CARR - Westfield Mayor , Westfield Republican / Mayville Sentinel News

Editor's Note: The following information is an update to last week's article on the Jan. 5 fire in Westfield.

Patrolman Muscato responded to the scene and found occupants Doug Kennedy, and Mary Ellen Onore who said they had been aroused by second-floor tenants Stephanie and James McKillip that they smelled smoke. Kennedy and Onore attempted to alert George Tressler and Emil Moravek but were unable to do so.

Officer Muscato entered the building in an attempt to rouse George Tressler. Due to the heavy smoke, he was unable to make it to the apartment. He then broke the window to allow the smoke in the apartment to clear. Onore looked through a window and said she saw something. Patrolman Muscato then crawled into the apartment to remove Tressler, he was assisted by Doug Kennedy and fireman Herbert Johnson. They were successful in removing Tressler to the fire department ambulance. Later Onore observed a light in the apartment of Emil Moravek. Patrolman Muscato again entered the burning structure and led Moravek to area where the ambulance was located.

I would again like to commend Patrolman Muscato for his actions. At this time I would like to commend Herbert Johnson, Mary Ellen Onore and Doug Kennedy for their perserverence in attempting to alert the other occupant of the building. It is due to their quick actions that averted a tragedy. Again, I would like to thank all of the fire personnel who participated.
