RIPLEY - The word for the month of November was "empathy." Throughout the month, teachers were asked to look for students who displayed empathy.
Paige Zarpentine, a kindergarten student at Ripley Central School District, was nominated by her classroom teacher, Shannon Rowe, and awarded the November Student of the Month.
"An empathetic 5-year-old is a rare treat," Rowe said. "The ability to understand (and share) others feelings can be complicated. Paige Zarpentine, an all-star kindergarten student, shows daily her ability to understand and care for others. Paige has a lovely ability to calm those around her with her presence. She shares that gift with all people she touches, young and old.

"Her cheerful personality is ever present in the room," Rowe said. "Paige is a bright and helpful young lady with wisdom beyond her years. At any given time you may find her cleaning up, helping organize, working with other students, patiently reminding friends what is right - all the while smiling. She never expects recognition or praise. Her true desire is to bring happiness to others. Through empathy, Paige makes the kindergarten classroom a reflection of herself."
