Over the Backyard Fence in Sherman

December 5, 2012

Christmas is just 26 days away and that special holiday activities in Sherman begin on Saturday when Santa Claus visits Sherman. Parents and children or grandchildren may start the season with breakfast with Santa 9-10 a.m. in the SCS cafeteria. Donations are appreciated, but not necessary. The event is sponsored by the Sherman Chamber of Commerce. You may bring your own camera to take pictures of children with Santa.

Sherman's 26th annual Old Fashioned Christmas will begin that same day with a Christmas craft bazaar at the Stanley Hose Co. fire hall across from Minerva Library on Miller Street. Lunch will be provided by the Stanley Hose Co. Auxiliary. Music will be played from noon to 2 p.m.

The Christmas tree lighting ceremony will take place at 2:30 p.m. in front of the old department store on Main Street. To purchase a bow for the tree, and dedicate it to a person of your choice, contact Jill Pacy at 761-6881. This event benefits the SCS Music Boosters.

More holiday music, provided by the SCS music department, precedes the tree lighting. There will also be Christmas lights at the Yorker Museum throughout the season.

At 6 p.m. on Sunday, the Christmas tureen dinner will be held at the fire hall. Bring your own table service, beverage container and a dish to pass. The dedication of the festival will be made prior to the tureen dinner.

A non-denominational church service follows the dinner and dedication, with seasonal music provided by the area churches.

Music for the holidays at Sherman Central School are as follows (all begin at 7 p.m.):

Elementary Concert - Tuesday, December 11

Junior High Concert - Thursday, December 13

Senior High Concert - Monday, December 17

I'm sure you would all enjoy attending these programs and also the church Christmas programs that I'll have in the paper next week.

The Sherman Village Board will meet Dec. 5 in the village office.
