Westfield 30, Brocton 26

WESTFIELD - The Westfield Minihawks midget football team went to 5-1 on the season with a hard earned 30-26 victory Saturday night, Sept. 29 at home against a very tough Brocton team.

This was by far the most exciting game the Minihawks have played all season. The boys showed great heart and determination in pulling out the victory.

Westfield got off to a rough start as Brocton returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown which gave them a 6-0 lead. After scores by both teams, Westfield wound up trailing at the half for only the second time this season. After a spirited halftime meeting, the Minihawks showed their true colors and pounded out the win.

The game came down to Westfield having possession with a four point lead and about five minutes on the game clock. The Minihawks needed several first downs to run out the clock to hold on for the win. Strong running and blocking were the keys that led to the victory as Hauser converted on a fourth and short to seal the win and send Westfield to 5-1 on the season.

On offense, the Minihawks had two touchdowns each by running backs Ryan Jafarjian and Ryan Schermerhorn. Two point conversions were completed by quarterback Evan Hauser, running back Shawn Horr and Schermerhorn. The offensive line again set the tone as Westfield used a power running game to eventually wear down a very strong Brocton defense.

The defense was led by the tackling of linebacker Austin Bourgeois and safety Horr who had a critical interception to halt a Brocton drive late in the game. Aggressive gang tackling was the key to Westfield holding a very deceptive Brocton offense from getting the victory.

This was an incredibly well played and hard fought game from both teams and all involved should be very proud of the effort they put forth. The Minihawks will look to end the season at 6-1 against Sherman-Ripley Saturday night, Oct. 6 at home.

Westfield 22, Brocton 8

WESTFIELD - The Westfield Goldenhawks varsity midget football squad improved its record to 4-2 with a home win over Brocton Saturday night, Sept. 29.

Brocton controlled the ball most of the first quarter and struck first in the second quarter with a 55-yard touchdown on a fake punt pass. Westfield struggled with ball protection early in the game with an interception, fumbled snaps and poor exchanges causing it to stall on its first three possessions. The Goldenhawks put together a 63-yard six-play drive in the second quarter for their first score. Long runs by Chris Catalano and Mike Poletto on the edge set up a 30-yard touchdown run by Simon Williams up the middle.

Catalano started the second half off for Westfield with a 67-yard touchdown kickoff return. Brocton and Westfield exchanged scoreless possessions five more times in the third quarter with excellent defensive line play for both teams. Westfield finally put together a scoring drive late in the third with a 20-yard run by Williams who also kicked the extra point. The Westfield offensive line had a fantastic game with holes being opened by Christian Miles, Brandon Bane, Jordan Hebner, Cody Wood and Max Bates, leading to 274 yards rushing and 22 points.

On defense, Westfield recorded 19 gang tackles with added individual performances by Chamberlin and Catalano. Westfield held Brocton to 155 yards rushing and 8 points. The game ended early due to lightning.
