MAYVILLE - Supervisor Don Emhardt said, "I gotta believe we're working on it," responding to continuing complaints about violence and drug dealing in a lakeside neighborhood along Elmwood Rd. in the Town of Chautauqua.

Residents from the Elmwood Rd., Fisherman's Lane area have used the public comment portion of recent town board meetings to voice their concerns about what they claim are frequent instances of violent, disorderly and criminal behavior by some locals.

"It looks like the same old thing," resident Jeff Leonarczyk said, and described problems he alleged were still unchecked. "We do see a cop down there every now and again."

"We've been talking about this for four years," resident Sally Bobsein said.

"I haven't gotten to the people I need to," Emhardt said.

Chautauqua County Legislator Vince Horrigan (R-Dist. 17) said he was told the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Department had increased patrols and, "the county drug task force has taken notice."

During the business meeting, the board unanimously approved the purchase of a John Deere loader for $84,000 from the successful bidder, Five Star of Buffalo. Emhardt told the board Five Star's offer was the only one meeting the required specifications outlined in the town's bidding notice.

Board member Jim Kurtz reported on a Thursday, Aug. 30 meeting, part of a series, to hear ideas for the town's planned 34-acre park behind the old high school building. There are now "about a dozen" preliminary suggestions for what should be included in the park, according to Kurtz.

In other business, County Legislator Fred Croscut (R-Dist. 20) told the board he definitely favored the sale of the county home, and his only concern now, "is the welfare of the residents" in the home.
