CORRY, Pa. - Bill Deuink had a round of 80 gross, 67 net, to lead his team to first place at the North Hills Golf course in Corry, Pa., where the Westfield Retirees Golf League gathered on Monday, Sept. 6.
It had rained Sunday, but the sun came out to make ideal playing conditions. A total of 22 golfers played the last round of the current season.
Deuink got a skin on hole no. 3. Sam Arcadipane had 88 low 74, Keith Rothwell had 95 gross 74 low net also and Dick Kurek's net of 91 was not counted for a team total of 215.
At 219, Roy McKinnon led the way with 85 low 69. Gary Farley had a 74 net, John Barone 76 net and Gary Nash 99, 79 net.
Deuink's 67 and McKinnon's 69 were the only two golfers in the 60s.
Also tied at 219 were partners Al Muck 86, 72 net, Harry Barton 71 net, Todd Swanson 91, net 76 and John Barone tied with 76 net.
Just one stroke behind at 220 were Jim Sudal 89 gross, 75 net, Bob Rogers 71 net, Les Yokum 88, 74 net and Jim Quinn 94 net 77 was not counted.
Fourth place Jeff Wagner 82, net 73, Vin Paternosh an even 100 gross 79, Barton 71 net, Mel Allan 76 net. Wagner also won two skins - a par on the par 4 on hole no. 2 and a birdie on par 3 hole no. 15. Just three holes were eligible for skin ranking.
Last, but not least, Phil Young - 83 to include a 40 on the back nine - Roger Kolpien 88, Leroy Vahl 98 and Kick Kurek 127.
Muck was closest to the pin on no. 7 and Rogers on hole no. 11.
The league finishes its season with a scramble-string tourney on Monday, Sept. 24 at Green Meadows Golf Course. Players should meet at the Moose Lodge parking lot by 8:15 a.m. Hot dogs, hamburgers, chips and soft drinks will be served.
