Welch Field pool and skate park still open

The Welch Field pool and skate park will continue to be open on a limited schedule weather permitting. Call 326-4441 with questions.

Fall soccer sign-ups for Westfield, Ripley, Brocton and Mayville

WESTFIELD - There is still time to sign up for Fall Local Youth Soccer. Applications can be picked up and turned in at the Village of Westfield window in Eason Hall, located at 23 Elm Street. Applications can also be mailed in.

Sign-ups are for children ages 4 through 11, specifically children turning 4 by Sept. 4 and not turning 12 until Oct. 28. Games will begin Saturday, Sept. 8 and end Saturday, Oct. 27.

The fee is $20 for the first child, $15 for the second and $10 for the third with a maximum of $45 per family. Scholarships are available if needed.

Walk for Wellness 5K Run/Walk in Westfield

WESTFIELD - The Westfield Memorial Hospital Cardiac Services Department will conduct the 25th annual Dr. Robert E. Storms "Walk for Wellness 5K Run/Walk" on Thursday, Sept. 6.

Over the past 24 years, community support for this event has enabled the department to add new services and equipment. All of the monies raised this year will be used to purchase much needed exercise equipment and refurbish the department.

The 5K run/walk will be held in the evening, starting at 6 p.m. Registration for this event will be held at 5:30 p.m., in the lobby of Westfield Memorial Hospital. This year the walkers and runners will be using the Westfield Academy and Central School track. The first 100 participants will receive t-shirts. Blood pressure checks will be available in the hospital lobby. Pledge forms are available in the hospital lobby and at the Cardiac Rehab Department. Checks should be made payable to the Westfield Memorial Hospital. Refreshments and prizes will be given after the walk in the hospital dining room.

Sponsors for the event have been contacted and any other donations are always welcomed. Several sponsors, along with the WMH Auxiliary, have already committed to this event. The WMH Auxiliary is very appreciative of the community support they receive to provide Westfield Memorial Hospital with additional funding to promote its continued growth. Anyone with questions regarding this worthwhile, rewarding event should contact Marie Leone at 326-3766 or any Auxiliary Board member.

Visitors bureau annual golf tournament

CHAUTAUQUA - The Chautauqua County Visitors Bureau's 16th annual golf tournament held in honor of CCVB founding director Donald Hogan will be held on Saturday, Sept. 15 at the Chautauqua Golf Club beginning at 8 a.m., with a shotgun start.

Contestants will compete for first, second and third place prizes plus longest drive and closest to the pin awards. The cost is $80 per person and includes a buffet lunch.

Parties interested in playing in the CCVB/Hogan Memorial Golf Tournament, or in sponsoring a hole, should contact Chautauqua County Visitors Bureau at 357-4569.

Proceeds from the annual tournament benefit the Donald Hogan Tourism Scholarship program. This program awards between three to four scholarships to area seniors each year based on an essay outlining the importance and relevance of tourism in Chautauqua County. Since its inception in 2001, the program has awarded $36,000 in scholarships to 60 area students.

Donald Hogan was the director of Chautauqua County Vacationlands Association, forerunner of Chautauqua County Visitors Bureau, until 1989.

Walk to end Alzheimer's at Chautauqua

CHAUTAUQUA - Area residents can take the first step in uniting in a movement to end Alzheimer's disease by picking up a Walk to End Alzheimer's brochure, which includes a registration and contribution form for the upcoming Chautauqua Walk to End Alzheimer's being held on Saturday, Sept. 15 at the Chautauqua Institution beginning at 10 a.m. with registration opening at 9 a.m. The Western New York Walks are presented by Conestoga-Rovers & Associated, ElderWood Senior Care, Praxair, Tim Horton's and West Herr.

The 2012 Walk to End Alzheimer's brochures are available at the following Chautauqua County businesses:

Stroke Awareness Walk at SUNY Fredonia

SUNY Fredonia will host a Stroke Awareness Walk on Saturday, Sept. 15 at 10 a.m. to increase community awareness of stroke, to provide education on stroke prevention, and to introduce services available at the Youngerman Center for Communication Disorders.

The walk begins and ends at the Youngerman Center, covering just over two miles along Central Avenue. A lunch will be served after the event. There is no entry fee.

HARVEST Walk/Run/Bike in Mayville

MAYVILLE - A Community HARVEST Walk/Run/Bike event will be held at the Mayville United Methodist Church on Sunday, Sept. 16. Harvest stands for "Healthy food, Active bodies, Resources for the hungry, Values for the community, Effective Changes in the welfare of neighbors, Service to others, Thank you."

Registration begins at 1:30 p.m., while the walk starts at 2 p.m. Teams to walk/run/bike and sponsors are needed.

This walk is to benefit the local area Mayville and Ashville food pantries. As all donations are distributed locally, this is a great event for groups who want to help the needy and have a good time

Apple Seed Christian Preschool 5K Run/Walk

WESTFIELD - The Apple Seed Christian Preschool is getting ready for its fourth annual 5K Run/Walk fundraiser.

The event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 6 at Welch Field on Third Street between Elm and Union Streets. Registration forms for the 5K can be found by calling 326-3110 or online at www.appleseedchristianpreschool.org. Pre-registrations must be received by Monday, Sept. 24. Registration and check-in for those pre-registered will begin at 8 a.m., and the race will begin at 9 a.m., sharp. Pre-registered participants will receive an event t-shirt. Runners, walkers and those who want to cheer them on are all welcome.

The course will be fairly challenging, but the event is taking place at just the right time because the invigorating scent of grapes will be in the air. The course runs from Welch Field on Elm Street to Third Street, across to Spring, up to Bliss, up Allen Road to the highest point where it meets Martin Wright Road and then down to 394, across Bliss and down Elm back to Welch Field.

Right now, the preschool is actively looking for area businesses interested in sponsoring this event. Anyone interested in doing so should call the preschool at 326-3110. This fundraising event directly benefits the Apple Seed Christian Preschool students.

Apple Seed Christian Preschool also has a few openings left for the 2012/2013 school year. Classes for 3-year-olds will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 to 11:30 a.m., beginning Tuesday, Sept. 11. Classes for 4-year-olds will be held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Apple Seed is proud to present an excellent program for preschool aged children encouraging appropriate child development socially, physically, emotional, academically and spiritually.
