Eugene Peck

Eugene "Gene" Peck, 90, of 12 Spruce Drive, Mayville, N.Y., formally of Sherman, N.Y., passed away Tuesday, July 31, 2012, in Absolut Care, Westfield, N.Y.

Mr. Peck was born Jan. 22, 1922 in Sherman, the son of the late George and Jennie Peck.

A Staff Sergeant in the Army, he served in World War II in the South Pacific Islands from 1942 to 1946. After returning home, he worked as an equipment operator building roads including Interstate 90 from Silver Creek to Ashtabula, Ohio. In later years, he owned his own heavy equipment, clearing land and built over 300 ponds in Chautauqua County. He enjoyed seeing what he could carve out of Mother Earth. He loved spending time with his family and friends.

Eugene was a member of the Edwards Chapel United Methodist Church, Norton Raspas Legion of Sherman, VFW of Mayville and the Westfield Moose.

Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Evelyn (Whitney) Peck of Mayville, N.Y.; a son, William (Kathleen) Peck of Panama; a daughter, Valerie (Mark) Bemis of Sherman; a daughter-in-law, Georgeanna Peck of Sherman; two sisters, Ethel Scarpine of Westfield and Esther Varassa of Corry, Pa; nine grandchildren, Brian (Larina) Peck of Orlando, Fla., Daniel (Amy) Peck of San Diego, Calif., Robert (Wendy) Peck of Fort Ann, N.Y., Melissa (Glenn) Topolski of North Tonawanda, N.Y., Ryan Peck of Liverpool, N.Y., Brandon (April) Peck of Elgin, Pa., Zachary (Amanda) Bemis of Normal, Ill., Jared (Nicole) Bemis of Findley Lake, N.Y., and Jace Bemis of Findlay Lake, N.Y.; and 17 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Ronald Peck; a sister, Elizabeth Nolan; and a brother, Gerald Peck.

Family and friends were received at the Spitzer Funeral Home, Sherman, N.Y., on Thursday, Aug. 2 from 6 to 8 p.m., and one hour prior to the funeral service which was held at the Spitzer Funeral Home on Friday, Aug. 3 at 11 a.m. The Reverend Timothy Phelps of the Edwards Chapel United Methodist Church officiated. Burial was in the Sherman Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Edwards Chapel UM Church, 9227 Cherry Hill Road, Clymer, N.Y. 14724
