Bernard C. Newhouse

MAYVILLE - Bernard C. "Bernie" Newhouse, 78, of 72 Valley St., Mayville, N.Y., passed away Thursday (June 28, 2012) at home following a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born in French Creek, N.Y., July 12, 1933, the son of the late Roy and Ruth Shaw Newhouse.

Bernie was a 1952 graduate of Clymer Central School and was a veteran of the U.S. Army Combat of Engineer Corp.

He was employed at Standard Portable in Mayville for 44 years of which he was vice president and general manager for 30 years.

Bernie was a member of the Mayville United Methodist Church, Chautauqua Lake Memorial VFW Post 8647 of which he was a charter and lifetime member, the American Legion Post 494 and had been very active in the Mayville/Chautauqua Little League.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He enjoyed spending winters in Naples, Fla. He also enjoyed golfing, baseball, country music and collecting political memorabilia.

Bernie is survived by his wife of 49 years, Betty Thompson Newhouse whom he married Valentine's Day, Feb. 14, 1963; children Scott (Liz) Newhouse of Naples, Fla., Tammy Buck of Jamestown, N.Y., Cathleen Benton of Stockton, N.Y., and Richard (Juanita) Hubbell of Mayville, N.Y.; grandsons Ethan Newhouse of Naples, Fla., and Shane Hubbell of Mayville; and great-grandchildren Dylan, Derek and Hyacinth Hubbell.

Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a daughter, Teri Newhouse in 2005, a son-in-law, Paul Benton in 2008, and a sister, Edna Cook in 2009.

The funeral service was held at 11 a.m., Monday, July 2 in the Freay Funeral Home, Mayville. Rev. Mark Parsons officiated. The family will receive friends from 2 to 6 p.m., Sunday, July 1 in the funeral home.
